William C. (Sonny) Buie, Preacher, Painter & Wood Carver, was born in Natchez, Mississippi on
June 5, 1929. He married Norma Jean Wyatt on September 7, 1950. They have 5 children, Debbie Ferguson, Becky
Zerbe, Billie Marcum, William Buie III., and Mandy Frazier. He is a Baptist Preacher who started preaching when he was
14 years old and was ordained in 1949. His art reflects the moves he made during his ministry. Starting in Natchez where
he was born, his paintings were mainly of the countryside around his home town. Next came a period of paintings based
on the area around New Orleans when he was attending the Seminary. He moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1955 and
entered his Southwest and Indian period. In 1964 he moved to Austin, Texas and concentrated on the Texas Landscape
and flowers. In 1974 he moved to Gallup, New Mexico to become a missionary to the Indians and produced many paintings
of Indian culture and birds. In 1982 he moved his family to Rosepine, Louisana and his paintings shifted to the green
and grays of Cajun country. In 1988, he moved to Waco, Texas and resumed painting Texas landscapes and flowers, especially
Blue Bonnets. He retired from preaching in 1996, but has missed only a few sundays not preaching somewhere.
In 2003 he moved to Mexia, Texas and became pastor of Petty's Chapel Baptist Church in Corsicana, Texas. He has continued
to paint until a terrible accident in 2005 injured him and Jean and took the lives of Becky & Bill Zerbe. His painting
is limited for the time being, until he has recovered.
